Idea process

I have an unusual process for gathering and processing ideas. I like to be impulsive and sporadic as I find obvious patterns can be boring. As much as I enjoy a well organised essay and like work to be scheduled etc. design is an extension of art, and expression.

Patterns and direct processes and regimented research can, at times, push a lack of spontaneity. Some of my favorite pieces of work have been due to doing extensive research in a search for something that hasn't been done yet, rather than something that has. This makes my research a little more sporadic than some others, and it can take longer depending on the number of options already executed, but the day I let originality fall by the wayside is my last day as a designer, or as an artist.

Simplicity

Inspire, Motivate and Intrigue were 3 words given to us earlier in the term. Lots of things Inspire me, life inspires me, personal style, colour, shapes, patterns, moods, sounds, etc.
Motivation and intrigue, however, brought up some more specific answers.

My motivation in design is the same as my motivation in life. Pushing peoples boundaries has always been something I have an interest in. When a person is out of their comfort zone the world is new to them. Obscurities are what I live for, even the little ones people walk straight by.

I am more intrigued by how simple things can impact people in such a big way. Simple shapes can have more impact than intricate patterns etc. The impact of simplicity is a great thing sometimes, which is a big part of the reason I enjoy origami.

Big teeth

So, after a lot of deliberation, I have decided to adapt my project to a more university acceptable brief. Instead of looking at how colour can effect memory I plan to examine the difference in memory retention between digital and non digital information.

So here's my first draft of my second project aim:

This research aims to examine the differences of human cognition of visual elements between digital and traditional methods and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each in a Guerrilla marketing environment in order to create a more engaging form of advertising.

The wording is a bit messy but it's an idea I think I can live with all year and still do some of the things I wanted to do this year. Constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

I'm aware I may be biting off more than I can chew here as it's a big area, but I recon I've got fairly big teeth.

some guerrilla advertising top collections

top 40 Guerrilla advertising examples
...35 more

Had a look at these and some lot them are pretty cool. Most are sculpture or Billboards of some sort and a lot of them are more pricey than i could manage in my project but the ideas are really good

My pitch

I went into my pitch session with a fairly clear idea of what I wanted my project to be. One of my main aims, on a personal level, was to remind others that do design that computers aren't everything. New technology can be exciting, but it's not all there is, and it's not necessarily the best option either in a lot of cases.

After presenting my pitch it was strongly suggested that I tie new media into my project so as not to risk a fail, a situation i am less than enthusiastic about, which leaves me with 2 options.

1. Continue with my current project, do some valid research into colour and memory, and hopefully create something that will make people look up from their i-phones...and either fail or get a very marginal pass.

2. Change my project to be something I have little enthusiasm for, and try to force my way through to eventually have a final project I never wanted to have.

As you can tell neither of these are particularly good outcomes so I'm currently still putting a lot of thought into how I can involve new media in my project. The same thing keeps coming back to me.
New media, no matter what the form, can be turned off. A poster can not.

We were told all through last year and the start of this year that this was our opportunity to create something that would speak to who we were as designers and develop our style. Who I am as a designer is someone who believes people should live life, not google it. Because of that, I have to choose between designing something I love or being graded well.

Pitch session (1-3 years)

I found it difficult to get ideas and information out of my group as they did seem to be fairly quiet. I made it clear from the offset that constructive criticism was welcome but, possibly because it was the first meeting, most people were fairly reluctant to share ideas and there were a lack of visuals which made criticism difficult.

Everybody was allowed plenty of time to go through what they had with them and to ask any questions they wanted answered. I gave what feedback I could and have also messaged each person individually to re-iterate what was said in the group session so that they can look back on it later if they want to.

Group members had various issues such as feeling they lack in technical skills to approach modules confidently and assuring them that the use of a blog is acceptable practice as a type of sketchbook style research. Most of my suggestions were to consult the relevant lecturer or speak to other members of the class in order to feel more comfortable in the skills required to fulfil the brief.

I think I did well at getting people to talk about their projects but I could have been more organised in the manner of setting things up and having access to learning resource links etc. available before they arrive.

Some links i'll be using

I was curious to see if interactivity aids advertising memory for some, as it does in learning so I've been looking at some kinetic origami, some of which I've tried already, some I have not.

Every big city has at least one fountain it seems, if this could be done on a larger scale with business logos or event information in it and lasted long enough could be really effective. it's totally worth having a quick look at some of the videos

This, I just thought was really interesting

Aim and Objectives

So this is the basic research aim and objectives i have come up with so far. I will probably end up expanding on this again slightly before the proposal but this seems to be a fairly solid project outline that takes all the things i want to work on into consideration.
If anybody has suggestions of things that need to be clarified or possible ways to do things differently please let me know :)
